Blackberry 10 and RANDOM UPDATES!!!

Wassup G brothaass??

lame new introduction line? yeah I know. Well it feels like it’s been forever since I posted on this blog, and to that I apologize. I’m sorry. I’ve been so caught up with life, I’ve got my finals in two weeks and I haven’t even started revising. I have a test tomorrow, math test. I’ve studied for that already but I’m still skeptical about it. Well anyhoo, on to the tech!

I feel like I’ve been less involved with tech recently, maybe it’s because I’ve been into way too many things. I recently developed 3 new hobbies (DJing, Audiophilia and Graphic Design) and also picked up some old hobbies (Guitar, Golf, Gaming) and I’ve been really involved in them. But alas, it’s time I prioritized don’t you think? Well tentatively I’ve chosen to keep filmmaking and Technology as my main hobbies, and audiophilia/guitar/photography/golf/gaming as the side hobbies. The rest will just have to wait till I find some time in my life. So what’s new in the technology department you ask?

Probably the biggest bit of news we have today,RIM (yes that company that was doomed to die) recently, at BlackBerry World 2012, unveiled their latest operating system and successor to the current OS7 line of blackberries; BlackBerry 1o. Among other features, blackberry 10 will feature a revamped user interface, a much improved on-screen keyboard and some other well needed changes. On a hardware standpoint BB10 will feature displays going up to 1280×768, that is one beautiful screen, along with this will come multiprocessors of course. Nothing else is confirmed and neither is an Alpha build of BB10 ready. Check out this link for the sneak peek at bb10.

In other news, Treyarch just confirmed rumors about Call Of Duty: Black Ops II with the special launch trailer. From the trailer we can see that it will be set in a modern day los angeles and there are some awesome new features coming to the cod franchise. I must say that the trailer had stellar graphics and I will be pleased if the graphics can remain that astounding throughout the game. You can see for yourself here.

In other more personal news, I have finally decided on a name for my film company, wait for it, On The Rocks Entertainment! To stay in touch with my filmmaking goodness you can check out my filmmaking blog (it’s hyperlinked dude). Aside from that, I have a question for you guys, how would you feel if I were to start making podcasts? Is that something you might be interested in? I think it would be awesome. Just me being my random self, doing all sorts of dumbassery. Lemme know in the comments below!

Peace out, SnazzyHam.

Best Looking phones (end of 2011 issue)

I’m not gonna lie, I’m a sucker for buying phones that don’t have the right specs, but look freakin awesome! So heres my list of the top 8 best looking phones, in ascending order.

8. Blackberry Curve 9360

7. HTC Sensation XE

6. Apple iPhone 4/4S

5. LG Optimus 3D

4. Samsung/Google Galaxy Nexus

3. Motorola Droid Razr

2.  Motorola Droid X2

1. Nokia Lumia 800 (The Dark Knight Rises Limited Edition Especially)

New Phone Time?

Is that phone in your pocket rotting? is it time for an upgrade? can’t decide which phone to use, because of the dastardly large number of new phones releasing each week? well you’ve come to the right place, cause I got the perfect guide for you!

instead of making this a top 5 phones thing like I usually do, I’ll split this guide into priorities and what you need out of a phone, such as simplicity, power or nerd-gasmic experiences. that’s right, I made my own word, nerdgasmic.

Let’s start with the most thought about factor for teens and the working adult:

Communication

BlackBerry Bold 9900

yes, it’s a blackberry. no, I’m not high. With a 1.2GHz processor coupled with Liquid Display hardware acceleration, a 2.8″ HVGA capacitive touchscreen display and the best keyboard on earth, the blackberry bold 9900 takes the no. 1 spot for communication. why? well because blackberries are excellent communication tools, with the best email integration, BBM, and heavy social network integration, BlackBerries are excellent devices for keeping in touch with your friends, families or co-workers. sure the apps aren’t that great, but honestly who needs apps? well everyone but still, you probably have a tablet or media device for those… Other than apps, the only limitation I have found on this phone is the terrible 1300mAh battery that juices this device.

WOW- Factor

Apple iPhone 4S

Sure it looks exactly like the 4 and many were disappointed with this release of the iPhone, even I was at first but it’s really starting to grow on me now. I loved the design of the 4 and was glad to see them stick with it, although I do wish they had gone with a 4″ Display. Other than that it sports very welcome updates such as a dual core processor and bumped up camera, this phone is perfect for the every day user, with its amazing ecosystem of apps, integration with your life and for the love of God, Siri! This phone is perfect for the every day user.

NERD APPEAL

Google Galaxy Nexus

That’s right, everything about this phone screams AWESOME to nerds like me, possibly the only real Android phone (read here for why) The 1.2 GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, Android 4.0 and that brilliant 4.65″ Super AMOLED HD 720p display, that’s right, 720p!! it’s like having a theater in your pocket! this phone should be crowned king o’ the geeks!

All Rounder

Nokia Lumia 800

Yes, know what you must be thinking, didn’t nokia die? well no, and yes this is the best phone out there right now, according to me. Other than the completely sexy unibody polycarbonate design (look at how sexy it is) The Nokia Lumia 800 is one amazing phone. Packed with a 1.4GHz Qualcomm chip, 16Gigs of memory, An 8 Megapixel camera, 3.7″ clearblack AMOLED and windows phone mango, this is the real deal. The focal point of this phone is the OS, windows phone 7.5 is a brilliant blend of easy to use software and beauty. It has a minimalistic feel to it, so you feel elegant and classy when using it. Best of all it’s practical, it does everything you need it to, and makes day to day living just a tad more elegant. To know more about windows phone and it’s awesomeness, check out the youtube vids. One things for sure, when I go to university, I’m definitely getting myself a windows phone.

Most Useful Application for Students (High School)

Students have a hard time keeping track of what’s going on, especially if you’re like me, and if you’re like me, then you most likely don’t have your phone with you at all times, sometimes you have maybe a tablet or media device, or sometimes just your computer.
Not only that, but most probably you’re always distracted by your tech? Am I right?
Well for me, I always seem to forget my homework, or what I was supposed to do at home, that’s when I started writing notes on my phone’s memo app, like I’m sure many of you do.
But how many times has it happened that you’re sitting at home, away from your phone, or maybe its dead, and you’re just chilling with your comp, tablet, ipod, etc. Then you realise that you need to do something on that day, and saved your notes on that other device, then you’re at school again and have only your phone with you, check the notes and that’s not there, then you forget your work and might just end up in a crapload of poo. (haha, poo)
So what’s the answer to that? Evernote. Evernote is not just your basic note taking application, it allows you to keep text notes, audio notes, snapshots/pictures, etc. And it even let’s you upload PDF and .doc files. What’s unique about evernote compared to all the other notetaking apps? Well it let’s you keep all those notes in sync!! Now you must be thinking wha?? What the hell is wrong with this guy??? All other applications let me do that too? Well yes, while this statement may be true, not all note taking apps are available everywhere!! yes well literally everywhere, its got a native app for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry OS, and even that dinosaur:- symbiosaurus ( only nerds will get that)
Well what’s appealing to me about this app, the logo is an elephant on freakin green background!! Even though blue is my favorite colour, this logo is KEWL!!!

BBX no go on OS7?

A Message From RIM

A Message From RIM

As you can see in the image above, I asked RIM whether the current line of OS7 devices would be upgradeable to BBX, which is blackberry’s new OS for smarpthones and tablets, and it tuns out it won’t. 😦

what does this mean? well since the current OS7 handsets (torch2, 9900, etc.) all run on single core processors, they won’t be able to handle the processing power needed for BBX, so right now the only confirmed BBX device is the playbook… 😦

BlackBerry DevCon 2011

so are you still on the RIM bandwagon? you are? you’re probably from Indonesia, just sayin. we have 89% of RIM marketshare, and I’m proud to not be part of that. but if you are still a BB geek, or even the “i hate blackberries but i have to keep up with my social life” type of person, then you’ll be glad to know that DevCon begins soon, exactly 10:30 pm WIT. before I explain what DevCon is, I would like to make it clear that I am not insulting RIM, Blackberry users or even the phones themselves. Blackberries have fine hardware and some pretty decent software and not to mention the amazing phenomenon known as BBM. I love BBM and like blackberries, what I don’t like is the effect that blackberries have on the people of today’s generation. People have become so distracted with their phones, always clicking away on that “thing” whether its at mall, a movie theater, in class or even while driving! people have no self control and receive the urge to check their phone every single time they see that red light flashing! It’s become such an obsession, worse than the spread of zombie fever, but thank God not as bad as Bieber fever, thats just horrifying! Ugh! bieber…

Okay back to DevCon, as the name suggests, it is an amalgam of the words Developer and Convention. Most likely expected to be showcased at DevCon this year are
1. Android App support on the BB PlayBook
2. BBM on Android and iOS
3. The new all touch Curve and the new bold 9790

Android App suport is something that had been promised to us by RIM almost a year ago, and not surprisingly, they have failed to deliver. But speculation still arises that it will finally be shown of now as RIM has just pushed out an update to the playbook, entitled Blackberry Tablet OS 2.0, and videos have recently been leaked of an Android source code compiler for blackberry based platforms.

Probably the most stand out feature on my list, BBM for Android and iOS. some of you may be thinking? whaaaattt?? what did he just say? oh no he didn’t! well yes, yes I did. The day might finally come- the day that was speculated to happen after pigs learn how to fly- the day BBM subtracts BB out of the equation. Well you must be thinking why? well images have already leaked of BBM running on Android, and it’s actually a pretty smart and strategic move, according to myself. RIM already has an astoundingly high rate of decline in the market, and its taking time for their QNX based devices to come out(chill, I’m getting to that) and this may be a move, just to make sure they don’t hit rock bottom, before they think of a gamechanger. If they license BBM to Android and iOS at a monthly subscription based fee, they’ll be maintaining their market share at the consumer level, while at the same time persuading their Enterprise market (the business people) to not shy away from their blackberries (possibly to iOS for iMessage). It is speculated that BBM on a non BB device will cost you approcimately $5 a month, now that’s not bad. not bad at all.

And now moving on to the new Curve and Bold. the curve was leaked a long long time back, along with the leak of the current OS7 devices and hopefully this one actually surfaces tomorrow. we already have the 9900, the Torch 2(9810), the all touch torch (9860) and the new curve (9560). the Curve touch(9380), is speculated to have a 3.2″ diagonal multitouch display with liquid graphics and a 1.2GHz snapdragon processor. At first it was rumored to have an 800MHz processor but a recent leaked on the BB Developer website indicates it will in fact have a 1.2GHz chip, SWEET!
The Bold 9790 however, is completely unleaked! nobody knows what it is. Could it be the QNX based BlackBerry Colt (“told ya I’ll be gettin here) that we all are oh so eagerly awaiting? QNX is the software/OS that RIM purchased some time back and coupled with their PlayBook tablet, and it was rumored to be coming to handheld BB’s by 2012. If this is the rumored QNX handset, then boy o boy am I excited 🙂
