The Impact Music Adds to our Television Experience

We can all agree that the background music used on TV shows play a major role in creating more impact and effect on the scene or story being told. With that said, there are obviously a few songs here and there that affect some people more than others. It’s all a matter of perception and which songs attract your ears or which scene speaks to you. Here are a few songs (not the theme songs) that never fail to create memories of shows whenever I listen to them:

  • ‘If I Had A Gun’ by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds from Season 9 of One Tree Hill
  • ‘When the Stars Go Blue’ by Bethany Joy Lenz & Tyler Hilton because really this is a part of One Tree Hill history. Whenever this song comes up, it brings me back to the early days of Karen’s Cafe.
  • ‘How To Save a Life’ by The Fray for Grey’s Anatomy. People can argue that the GA song is Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol because it was a big part of the musical episode. But nope, How to Save a Life is my GA song because they used it in commercial breaks to depict the ever so legendary episode where Izzie pulls out Denny’s L-VAD wire.
  • ‘You Got What I Need’ by Joshua Radin for Grey’s Anatomy. Does everybody remember that episode with the boy who did ballet? And then he showed the doctors his skill to convince them to try harder to save his leg. I love that scene, it was so beautiful.
  • ‘Twice’ by Little Dragon for Revenge
  • ‘We Are Young’ by fun. for Chuck. They played in the last few episodes of the season before the show ended. And the song is already such a great song, but with the memory of Chuck attached to it, it’s better.
  • ‘Cobrastyle’ by Teddybears because this song was like the anthem for every Chuck fighthing scene
  • ‘Ghost in the Machine’ by B.o.B remind me of Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl
  • ‘Young Folks’ by The Kooks which is iconic in the Gossip Girl universe
  • ‘Slow’ by Grouplove brings me back to the 100th episode of Gossip Girl, the moment where Blair is about to marry Loui but she looks at Chuck to see if he’s going to oppose

Not a lot, but it’s different for everybody. Take a listen to any of those songs and see if it brings up any memories for you. Do share songs that spoke out to you while watching TV in the comments below as I would really love to hear them.

Warning: Do not continue reading unless you have seen the Chuck series finale

So….uhm…CHUCK is over… 😥 (sits in silence and stares at screen for a good amount of time)

Subway takes over BuyMore; Jeffster gets famous; Morgan & Alex move in together; Casey sets off to find Gertrude; Devon, Ellie, and Clara move to Chicago; and Chuck and Sarah start over?

Before all of that can happen though, we got to saw EVILSARAH!!!! Holy wow! Did you guys see Sarah beat the crap out of Chuck in “their house”?! THAT is good TV people!! Yes, it was horribly sad, and Chuck pouring his heart out was beautiful; but everything worked out well in the end of that scene so it’s okay, no harm no foul right.

My favorite person in the whole finale has got to be Morgan, hands down. He knows when to be cute, and then he knows when to be tough. And his idea about just kissing Sarah was not crazy, Ellie! It’s what you’re supposed to do, believe in magic kisses people (blame Disney). He gave John that whole speech, takes a big step with Alex, and the best part: plays around with a giant invisibility cloak. Grimes has totally redeemed himself for being a giant intersect ass.

Chuck’s mission to get Sarah back…..did anyone else recall The Vow at that point? Sarah loses her memory, then Chuck has to make her fall in love with him all over again. Which he’s kind of successful with in the end (I guess we’ve basically seen the ending to The Vow) so kudos to you!

Honestly, halfway through the final episode I’m like “they’re not going to be together in the end are they?”. I kind of became okay with that idea once Chuck got the intersect back *sheepish smile*. Until now, I have been on Team ‘Nothing Good Comes From The Intersect’, but that was only because they gave it to so many other people. Now that Chuck has it, everything is where it should be. I LOVE that he has the intersect back. Even if they’ve all given up the spy towel, and the intersect is kind of just sitting in his brain not doing anything. It’s how the show came to be, and i’m glad they ended it this way.

Initially, my favorite scene was in episode 12 when Casey dropped off the data log and we watched as Sarah practically watched herself fall in love with Chuck; BUT, NOTHING can beat “Chuck, tell me our story”. Nothing. And then he did, and all those flashbacks *cue everyone crying* :’) awwwhhhh, go chuck!

Extra Notes: I’m pretty sure the porn virus can kill anything. SAVE THE WORLD invite from Genral Beckman!! ;).

Reflection time:

One of the main themes brought out from the finale is that, and I quote, “5 years of Burbank can turn a man into butter”. Everyone’s gone soft! Except the people who weren’t soft before. In 5 seasons, I have watched Sarah turn into Chuck and Chuck turn into Sarah. Devon & Ellie have also switched roles a bit. Ellie has proven she can be more awesome than Captain Awesome himself; and Devon has kind of got the whole mommy thing down haha. The centre of this show is family. And over the years, we have all watched Chuck and Ellie expand their family.

Chuck, for whatever reason, has always needed saving. I can’t remember a time where us fans didn’t have to campaign for Chuck to get picked up for the next season. It royally sucked when they announced the final season, but it’s the right time you guys. We’re lucky the show didn’t just get axed mercilessly (mostly because the network will probably get burned down by angered fans if they did), I feel at peace and it’s time to celebrate Chuck; not curl up in a hole and cry forever.

I’m going to throw a bajillion links in yo faces now, because there are just some things you have to read (more closure?):

TV Wishlist!

A while back my favorite tv reporting site (TVLine) asked us readers to send them a wishlist of what we wanted when TV returned.

Well, here’s mine:

  1. I wish Once Upon a Time would show more scenes in the fairy tale world. They’re more interesting to watch and the back stories of the characters interest me more than what is going on with Emma and Henry.
  2. I wish Pam Fryman, director of himym episodes, would join the twittersphere because she’s like a legend. Directed over 100 episodes of himym. She gets the job done in a really epic manor. And most of all, it’s because in one of the blooper reels for himym, Jason Segel and Josh Radnor were laughing and one of the voices in the crew said that they’re going to call pam fryman (was really funny). She’s super respected and I would like to read what she has to say on twitter.
  3. I wish someone could kill Klaus so Tyler would be free and then he and Caroline can go back to having a vampire-werewolf relationship. Or maybe Klaus can just free Tyler, I don’t really want to see Joseph Morgan gone from the show like Daniel Gillies.
  4. I wish Hayley or Alex would get a boyfriend. Someone Phil doesn’t like. It’d be funny to see how he would handle that situation.
  5. I wish Hilarie Burton would come back to Tree Hill with Chad Michael Murray. PLS PLS PLS!!! It’s the final season, if Lucas is coming back it’s only fit if Peyton does too. I get that she has scheduling conflicts or whatever BUT come on Hilarie Burton! Tree Hill is like your second home, or at least it should be. meet the fans halfway and appear for one episode.
  6. I wish Cristina and Teddy would band together against Owen. I love Major Hunt, but when Grey’s comes back, I see him only focused at being The Chief because things with Teddy and Cristina are both going to be super tough. A hate relationship between Cristina and Teddy is worse to see. And more Arizona-Teddy friendship scenes. (I miss Scott Foley already)
  7. I wish Amelia would see Sheldon as more than just a friend on Private Practice. He’s exactly what she needs + he’s like the nicest guy ever. Don’t hurt the poor guy.
  8. I wish people would stop trying to benefit from Alex’s messed up mind on Nikita. It’s really sad to see, she’s so tortured, and so many people don’t even help. Does anyone truly care? I DO and I would rather see her happy than Michael and Nikita together (they’ve gotten quite boring).
  9. I wish the Chuck cast would make special appearances in other tv shows once the series finishes. Just like how the CT cast are doing now.
