How to speed up your PC, and prep it for Windows 8!

first of all, Happy Windows 8 day everybody! it’s a great day today is it not? I for one am super excited for Windows 8, I may be a bit speculative of it tho which is why I shall only install it on my laptop and then once I’m comfortable with it I shall install it on my pc. Over the past couple of months my laptops been giving me a hell load of problems, it’s a great laptop no doubt, great specs, 8GB of RAM and it’s still slow as hell. So I downloaded some software, cleaned up some stuff and voila, it’s ready for Windows 8. First I’ll be taking you through the things to do to speed up your PC, then I shall tell you about the methods of updating from windows xp, vista and 7 to windows 8 and finally an alternative for the lazy people.

1. Speed up Your PC!

one disadvantages with PC’s is the amount of clutter you end up installing over the years, the amount of temp files that are stored and cache files, all of this collect over time and slow down your computer quite a bit. The worst part is that windows doesn’t let you easily access these files and even when you access them you can’t tell the difference from the important ones and the unimportant ones. That’s why you should download CCleaner. With one click of a button it deletes all the unnecessary temp and cache files and really helps in increasing you’re computers speed and performance, it cleaned up 13GB space for me! There are many softwares you could use for uninstalling software but in my opinion the built in one for windows works fine, but if you don’t like that then CCleaner has one as well which works quite well. Another thing you should do is browse through your files for unnecessary junk that’s taking up space on your pc, this really helps free up some valuable hard drive space. Once again doing this manually works great but if you want to do it in a “prettier” way I suggest you download DiskSpaceFan. [Sources: LifeHacker]. Some people say that with windows 7 you don’t need to worry about defragmenting your hard drive (google defragmentation if you don’t get it) but I still feel that it does increase performance. My favourite tool for this is Auslogics Disk Defrag  This concludes my guide for speeding up ypu’re pc, now windows 8 time!

2. Different Upgrade options

There are two types of Windows 8 (normal and Pro) and they’re not really that different. Pro just adds various options for businesses and power users, if you don’t know what a power user is then chances are you aren’t one and the normal version of Windows 8 should be fine for you. If you’re on windows 7 pro or ultimate then you have to update to windows 8 pro. Any other Windows 7 types have the option of upgrading to Windows 8 or Windows 8 pro. Upgrading to windows 8 from windows 7 is a breeze, just click upgrade and all you’re apps, settings and data(files you’ve stored on your hard drive like documents, movies, songs) will be automatically transferred for you, no hassle. If you’re upgrading from windows Vista to 8 then only you’re settings and data will be moved. From XP to 8 only data and nothing else will be moved. One thing to note is that to upgrade from Vista you have to update to SP1 first and from xp you have to update to SP3 first. This can be done from within windows and don’t worry, it’s free. Chances are it automatically updated for you already so you may be good to go. To check just go into Control Panel, System and Security, System and see what it says next to Operating System.

3. Easy yet Hard yet Easy way Out

Do a fresh install. A fresh install is when you get the windows disc and empty you’re hard drive and install from scratch, giving you the feeling that you’ve just bought a new PC. I used to be a big fan of fresh installs, I used to love doing them. I never minded backing up all my data and software and stuff and starting from scratch everytime, it was actually quite fun. The reason I called this easy is because there’s no need to clean your cache and stuff, since you start from scratch, there’s no nonsense stored on the pc, thus letting it perform to it’s full potential. Doing this will even give you bause speeds on 1GB of RAM… for a while.

My Thoughts On Apple’s Oct 23 event.

So I’ve just finished watching up on all the recaps and the keynote of the Apple event, and I have a lot off opinions. Some good, Some bad. I’ll categorize them by product then give you an overall conclusion, this is my SAT prep getting in the way of my blogging btw.

1. iPad Mini

this is probably what the entire event was for, and here’s what I feel. First of all, I’m really pissed at Apple because of the way they dissed the Nexus 7, I respected Apple as a company, until that. I mean it’s okay to diss a product of you’re competitor but not when the product you’re offending has specifications that are generations ahead of the Product you’re announcing. The iPad Mini has the same processor as the iPad 2, a dual core chip with dual core graphics. The Nexus 7 comes with a Quad Core chip along a whopping 13 core graphics. How ya like that? The display on the Nexus is crisp and bright whereas the ipad mini’s display doesn’t even come close. One advantage that the Mini has is it’s iSight camera similar to that of the iPad 3, that’s a good shooter for a 7 inch tablet. It also claims to be as thin as a pencil but I’ll have to see it before I can judge. And to be honest, the iPad Mini looks like shit. I loved the 9.7″ on the iPad and even at times prefer using my iPad over my Transformer (for reading news and that sorta stuff) but the Mini has a less than striking form factor, but that’s just my opinion.

2. iPad 4

WTF?? Seriously, now this is bound to really piss anyone off. The iPad 3 was launched around only 7 months back, ONLY 7 MONTHS! and they’ve already signed it’s death certificate. If there’s one thing Apple is known for it’s for their yearly product cycle and always being true to their products, I don’t really know how to explain what I mean by that. I guess I can use an example. When people go to buy a product, they want to know that if they’re spending a lot of money on that product it’s going to be around for a while and won’t be discontinued so quickly. That’s one of the main things I loved about apple. You could buy an Apple product and 2 year’s later it would still be the “in thing”. But it seems like that’s not gonna happen anymore. This particularly bothers me because my dad just bought the iPad 3 in June and it’s already been discontinued?!?! how would that make you feel? The only thing that they claim to have upgraded was the front facing camera and the processor (although it’s still dual core, bummer) was it really a necessary upgrade? Couldn’t they wait till next year and keep the iPad 3 owners happy, now they might have even lost a bunch of loyal customers. What this proves is that Apple felt threatened by the launch of Microsoft’s Surface tablet that they felt they had the need to remind people of how “amazing” their products are.

3. 13″ Macbook Pro with Retina Display

Now this is a product I have personally been waiting for for a long time. It’s thinner, lighter, faster, more powerful and to top it all off it has that gorgeous retina display! My God is that thing a beauty. It’s crisp, rich, beautiful and elegant, everything a man needs in a girl (ba dum tiss). Seriously though, some people complain that “ohh there’s no disc drive, it’s useless” I say do away with that monstrosity! it’s not like anyone uses discs anymore. Send it the way of the floppy! Sayonara cd’s! My only gripe with the MBP is that it doesn’t have a decent video card! The Macbook pro has always been the perfect computer for an aspiring filmmaker as it’s mobile and has all the power needed to edit videos on the fly, most students in a filmmaking course use 13 inch macbook pro’s, the 15 inch is a bit too big to carry around and not to mention really pricey! Now that the MBP is running Intel Integrated Graphics (Eww! i know!) it’s not going to be able to edit video all that great, sure it would pull off some basic edits but throw some Magic Bullet on that bad boy and it’s going to choke! It’s a great laptop, one of the best in my opinion but it’s not for everyone.

4. Mac Mini

I love the idea of the Mac Mini, a not so expensive mac for people who want to dive into the ecosystem but not spend so much money. There’s not much to say about the new Mac Mini, it contains all the updates you would come to expect, faster ram, better processor and the usual. One thing to note is that, again, no graphics card. The mac mini is basically an MBP without the display. So why do they call it a desktop computer? it has a mobile motherboard, mobile RAM, and mobile everything, its not really a desktop.

5. iMac

I LOVE THE NEW iMAC! That is all. haha, all joking aside, it really is gorgeous. Have you seen it? it’s so thin! and Beautiful! The Specs are decent and finally I can say this, it has a VIDEOCARD! The display is gorgeous and I’m sure windows 8 will look bause on it (don’t hate). Again my only gripe is that due to it’s mobility, it’s got mobile architecture and you can’t really replace the components within it. So what happens in two years when the hardware in your iMac get’s outdated and you want to replace it? On a PC you can just open the case, change one or two components and you’re good to go, on the new iMac, tough luck bro.

apple was a respectable company but it seems like ever since the passing of
Steve Jobs the company has been going downhill, having products with no real
“zing” to them. In my opinion, apple felt threatened by Microsoft’s launch of
the Surface tablet and Windows 8 and Google’s upcoming launch of the Nexii (plural
of nexus) and therefore chose to have a sudden event that so convienently occured
before Microsoft and Google’s events. This clearly shows that they knew that they
would have problems, especially since they’ve already lost a ton of market share
to the Nexus and are bound to loose some to the Surface. It might be a smart move,
but I don’t think it’s ethical. I honestly think it’s brilliant that they chose
to do that, but they shouldn’t have dissed the nexus the way they did, it was a
pussy move to make and shows how unproffesional they can be. I have forever lost
my respect for apple as a ccompany.

p.s. Saahil if you’re reading this I’m sorry, I know you’re a fanboy
but you have to face the reality, apple is declining. Their dissipation
is near.
