My Thoughts On Apple’s Oct 23 event.

So I’ve just finished watching up on all the recaps and the keynote of the Apple event, and I have a lot off opinions. Some good, Some bad. I’ll categorize them by product then give you an overall conclusion, this is my SAT prep getting in the way of my blogging btw.

1. iPad Mini

this is probably what the entire event was for, and here’s what I feel. First of all, I’m really pissed at Apple because of the way they dissed the Nexus 7, I respected Apple as a company, until that. I mean it’s okay to diss a product of you’re competitor but not when the product you’re offending has specifications that are generations ahead of the Product you’re announcing. The iPad Mini has the same processor as the iPad 2, a dual core chip with dual core graphics. The Nexus 7 comes with a Quad Core chip along a whopping 13 core graphics. How ya like that? The display on the Nexus is crisp and bright whereas the ipad mini’s display doesn’t even come close. One advantage that the Mini has is it’s iSight camera similar to that of the iPad 3, that’s a good shooter for a 7 inch tablet. It also claims to be as thin as a pencil but I’ll have to see it before I can judge. And to be honest, the iPad Mini looks like shit. I loved the 9.7″ on the iPad and even at times prefer using my iPad over my Transformer (for reading news and that sorta stuff) but the Mini has a less than striking form factor, but that’s just my opinion.

2. iPad 4

WTF?? Seriously, now this is bound to really piss anyone off. The iPad 3 was launched around only 7 months back, ONLY 7 MONTHS! and they’ve already signed it’s death certificate. If there’s one thing Apple is known for it’s for their yearly product cycle and always being true to their products, I don’t really know how to explain what I mean by that. I guess I can use an example. When people go to buy a product, they want to know that if they’re spending a lot of money on that product it’s going to be around for a while and won’t be discontinued so quickly. That’s one of the main things I loved about apple. You could buy an Apple product and 2 year’s later it would still be the “in thing”. But it seems like that’s not gonna happen anymore. This particularly bothers me because my dad just bought the iPad 3 in June and it’s already been discontinued?!?! how would that make you feel? The only thing that they claim to have upgraded was the front facing camera and the processor (although it’s still dual core, bummer) was it really a necessary upgrade? Couldn’t they wait till next year and keep the iPad 3 owners happy, now they might have even lost a bunch of loyal customers. What this proves is that Apple felt threatened by the launch of Microsoft’s Surface tablet that they felt they had the need to remind people of how “amazing” their products are.

3. 13″ Macbook Pro with Retina Display

Now this is a product I have personally been waiting for for a long time. It’s thinner, lighter, faster, more powerful and to top it all off it has that gorgeous retina display! My God is that thing a beauty. It’s crisp, rich, beautiful and elegant, everything a man needs in a girl (ba dum tiss). Seriously though, some people complain that “ohh there’s no disc drive, it’s useless” I say do away with that monstrosity! it’s not like anyone uses discs anymore. Send it the way of the floppy! Sayonara cd’s! My only gripe with the MBP is that it doesn’t have a decent video card! The Macbook pro has always been the perfect computer for an aspiring filmmaker as it’s mobile and has all the power needed to edit videos on the fly, most students in a filmmaking course use 13 inch macbook pro’s, the 15 inch is a bit too big to carry around and not to mention really pricey! Now that the MBP is running Intel Integrated Graphics (Eww! i know!) it’s not going to be able to edit video all that great, sure it would pull off some basic edits but throw some Magic Bullet on that bad boy and it’s going to choke! It’s a great laptop, one of the best in my opinion but it’s not for everyone.

4. Mac Mini

I love the idea of the Mac Mini, a not so expensive mac for people who want to dive into the ecosystem but not spend so much money. There’s not much to say about the new Mac Mini, it contains all the updates you would come to expect, faster ram, better processor and the usual. One thing to note is that, again, no graphics card. The mac mini is basically an MBP without the display. So why do they call it a desktop computer? it has a mobile motherboard, mobile RAM, and mobile everything, its not really a desktop.

5. iMac

I LOVE THE NEW iMAC! That is all. haha, all joking aside, it really is gorgeous. Have you seen it? it’s so thin! and Beautiful! The Specs are decent and finally I can say this, it has a VIDEOCARD! The display is gorgeous and I’m sure windows 8 will look bause on it (don’t hate). Again my only gripe is that due to it’s mobility, it’s got mobile architecture and you can’t really replace the components within it. So what happens in two years when the hardware in your iMac get’s outdated and you want to replace it? On a PC you can just open the case, change one or two components and you’re good to go, on the new iMac, tough luck bro.

apple was a respectable company but it seems like ever since the passing of
Steve Jobs the company has been going downhill, having products with no real
“zing” to them. In my opinion, apple felt threatened by Microsoft’s launch of
the Surface tablet and Windows 8 and Google’s upcoming launch of the Nexii (plural
of nexus) and therefore chose to have a sudden event that so convienently occured
before Microsoft and Google’s events. This clearly shows that they knew that they
would have problems, especially since they’ve already lost a ton of market share
to the Nexus and are bound to loose some to the Surface. It might be a smart move,
but I don’t think it’s ethical. I honestly think it’s brilliant that they chose
to do that, but they shouldn’t have dissed the nexus the way they did, it was a
pussy move to make and shows how unproffesional they can be. I have forever lost
my respect for apple as a ccompany.

p.s. Saahil if you’re reading this I’m sorry, I know you’re a fanboy
but you have to face the reality, apple is declining. Their dissipation
is near.

Game Review: Saints Row The Third

Every once in a while that game comes along that’s both funny and interesting, that really let’s you enjoy yourself, that game is Saints Row the Third. What is Saints Row the Third? Well, it’s basically an open world, action adventure sandbox style game that let’s you roam around and do whatever the hell you want, all while having side missions to complete as well. Games such as these are some of my favorite types of games, they’re not too serious and extremely fun to play. Isn’t that what a game is supposed to be? fun? Well to describe better just how fun saints row is, I’ll be splitting my review up into Pro’s, Con’s and finally a conclusion. Let’s start with the pro’s shall we?

Vehicle’s and Driving System

yes, the real reason I play these games, the cars. Cars and vehicles as a whole in SR3 are amazing! SR3 has the best vehicle system in an open world game ever! The driving system is smooth and fluent and yet crazy awesome. One great thing about the cars are that you can store them in your garage (yes I am aware that GTA had that too) but in SR3, you get too take a vehicle out, crash it somewhere, and it still remains in your garage, you don’t lose it until you delete it! how amazing is that? Another thing is that customization’s are extremely detailed, you get to upgrade the inside and the outside, this makes it feel like you’re playing GTA mixed with NFS! You can also purchase an upgrade that let’s you call a “homie” and let him deliver a vehicle to you! how fun? oh and did my mention? you get to fly planes, yeah, I said it, planes! boom!

Gameplay and Storyline

Is there really much to say about this? you’re in a gang, you’re leader gets killed, you get pissed, and take out every single lonely jerk that stands in your way! The gameplay is overall comedic and quite fun, light and not too serious, unlike all the other games *cough* LA Noire *cough*. You get to pull out your smartphone and call for a mission, and even if you’ve finished the entire storyline already, there are loads of activities and side missions for you to play, so you don’t get bored 🙂 Also you get to buy buildings and invest in local stores, this earns you an hourly income, so you can buy some pretty slick and gangsta threads, which I’m getting to next

Clothing System and Gangs

Isn’t it more fun to play when you get to customize exactly how you look? from head to toe, SR3 allows you to customize exactly how you want to look. They also have preset outfits, for the lesser creative people or the ones who lack fashion sense (such as myself). The Gang feature is pretty neat as well, let’s you build a gang and customize exactly how you want them to act, from the cars they drive and guns they carry to how they dress (I personally filled up my gang with purple ninja’s who drive muscle cars).

Cops & Levels

yes sadly, every-time there’s a great game, there are flaws to it, and SR3’s biggest flaw is their police AI. Police are everywhere, and I mean everywhere! right outside your house, near the alley, in your mom’s toilet! And the worst part is their super sensitive, you bump into someone on the streets and next thing you know you’re getting shot at. And they’re so bloody hard to kill! No matter which gun you use, it takes at least 3 bullets for them to fall. That’s a waste of bullets, especially with the Luchador’s, Morning Star and Deckers all on your tail as well! And what is up with the level system? Games like GTA don’t ask you if you want it Easy, Medium or Hard, you play it the way it’s meant to be played, not how you want to play it!

Weapons and Shooting

Probably what you will be doing 80% of the time, shooting. Sure the weapons are upgradeable, but there isn’t much variety. Maybe it’s just me, but I like having 5-6 different types of SMG’s to choose from. And the shooting and aiming system isn’t just that comfy.

In conclusion, SR3 is a modern day re-imagining of GTA San Andreas and is really one hell of an amazing game. It brings awesomeness and humor together to really satisfy you’re gaming needs. I’m not saying it’s amazing for everyone, it can be very immature at times and is not for the people who want super serious games, if you want serious, go with Assasins Creed. I’ll  give this game an overall of 83% which is the best percentage I’ve given to a game since Mafia II (89%)
