Exams Tips for the TV Addict

Last year, for my IGCSE’s, I promised myself I wouldn’t watch TV regularly in order to focus on my studies. Everything worked out well in the end, but I didn’t exactly keep my promise. I ended up watching 3 full seasons of ‘2 and a half men’ – a show I don’t even watch by the way.

With exam season right around the corner, i’d thought i’d offer some suggestions that could help you during your dreaded exam months. If you’re like me, you have to watch TV no matter what. Quitting is not an option because, let’s face it, it doesn’t work. What you need is self-control. This is generally proportionate to how much you care about your exams. The more unprepared you feel, the more control you will have (this will be extremely evident the day right before the exam, procrastination is a b*tch).

There are two ways you can go about this, each with its own advantages and disadvantages:

1. The Top 5 Method – pick five of your favorite shows out of the lot and focus on those only, nothing else.

If you can manage to figure out which 5 you care about the most, the rest are simply irrelevant. You won’t be itching and going crazy reading tweets on other shows because you’re in the loop with those closest to your heart.

2. The Quick Escape Method – cut out all drama shows and watch only comedies. It’s quick, easy, and very rewarding in a stressful atmosphere.

Comedies last  on average 20 minutes and that is the perfect time for a study break or to grab a meal. The fact that you can watch while performing other tasks makes you less guilty about not studying. When your brain has turned into mush after a few hours of studying, doesn’t Modern Family sound like the perfect glass of lemonade on a hot day?

The Quick Escape method will probably let you log in more TV time (depending on the number of comedies you watch), while the Top 5 is much more concentrated. What’s important is that you do not stray. If you need to watch more, whatever you do, do not watch any of the shows you usually watch. Stick to old episodes/reruns or just starting a random new show you will not care about (i.e 2 and a half men). Once you start a show already on your schedule, you will have to tune back in every week which can be disruptive. I never used to watch 2 and a half men, and I just started on a random episode. It had no hold over me, and I was able to just watch it whenever. You need that because the TV shouldn’t control you, instead it should be vice versa.

It is fall, so a truckload of new tv shows are being dumped on our laps. Do not start any of the new shows. They are very unimportant in the scheme of it all and an added advantage is by the time your exams are done, you’ll know which are really worth watching from the reviews. Another tip is to be prepared for spoilers. Whether you like it or not, it’s going to happen, just don’t let it affect you that much. Accept it and move on. Whatever you read, it’s nothing like actually watching it happen. So when you do catch up after exams are over, I promise it’ll be okay.

That’s all the tips I have for now. I hope they are helpful, and most importantly, GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR EXAMS!

P.S: how great does Adam Scott look this season on Parks&Rec??! I know right!

Fall TV Pickups: What I’ll Be Watching

When Fall is here, new tv shows are thankfully here as well. A lot of new shows have been picked-up and from that lot, I’ve taken the ones which I’ll most likely be watching and split them into 3 categories: For Sure, On the Fence, and Let’s see how the first episode goes. The first category includes the shows I’ll definitely be watching. The second category for shows which look very promising but I’m not too sure it’s my cup of tea but it might be for you. The last and final category for shows that look okay, sort of like a wildcard – the trailers don’t stand out that much but maybe a full episode would make me come on board, who knows. I’ve included links to trailers/previews for the shows that have been released them so check em’ out.

For Sure

Arrow (The CW) (Extended Preview)

Based on DC comics superhero Green Arrow, Stephen Amell plays Oliver Queen –  the billionaire playboy that was presumed dead until now. Katie Cassidy plays his love interest, and Paul Blackthorne plays her father the detective that wants to arrest the new vigilante in Starling City.

Stephen Amell’s abs and kick ass fighting scenes with arrows being shot perfectly make this very entertaining. He’s rich by day, and helpful by night. Add some drama into that and what you get is an awesome new show.

666 Park Avenue (ABC)

Cast:  Dave Annable (Brother & Sisters), Rachael Taylor (Grey’s Anatomy), Robert Buckley (One Tree Hill), Mercedes Masohn (The Finder), Vanessa Williams (Desperate Housewives), Terry O’Quinn (Lost)

Dave Annable and Rachael Taylor become managers of the apartment building owned byTerry O’Quinn (main antagonist) and Vanessa Williams. The show focuses on the tenants and how the new managers uncover the mysteries of this building, including its demonic forces.

I can’t really ignore a stellar cast like that, it was the first thing that drew me to this show. I will be thoroughly freaked out because supernatural drama and horror is not exactly my genre, but I’m pretty intrigued about this apartment building.

Partners (CBS)

Cast: Michael Urie (Ugly Betty), David Krumholtz (Numbers), Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill), and Brandon Routh (Chuck)

FROM THE CREATORS OF WILL & GRACE, Max Mutchnick and David Kohan brings you something that will totally remind you of Will & Grace – and I say that as a good thing. I loved Will & Grace, and this is Verion 2.0 for me.

Louis (Michael Uri) and Joe (David Krumholtz) are BFF’s and partners in their architecture business. Sophia Bush plays Joe’s fiance, and Brandon Routh plays Louis’ boyfriend.

The Goodwin Games (Fox)

Cast: Becki Newton (Ugly Betty), Scott Foley (Felicity), and Jake Lacy (Better With You)

FROM THE CREATORS OF HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas alongside Chris Harris bring you The Goodwin Games – a show about 3 estranged siblings who come together when their rich father dies. Who’s going to get the inheritance? Whoever wins the games, of course. But that’s not entirely the point, the games are supposed to bring them closer together, duh.

It’s such a cute little family show intertwined with flashbacks of their childhood memories and hilarious personalities.

The Mindy Project (Fox)

This comedy centres around Mindy played by Mindy Kaling (The Office), the OB/GYN trying to get her personal life on track. Trailer is hilarious, I can’t wait!

Go On (NBC) (Extra clip) – reminds me of community a bit

Matthew Perry (Friends) plays Ryan King, the sportscaster who joins a support group to help deal with the loss of his wife.

Reminds me of Community a bit in the sense that he and his support group will become a family soon. Besides that, I am a bit worried that Go On will suffer the same fate Mr. Sunshine did.

On the Fence

The Carrie Diaries (The CW)

Sex & The City Fans, this is for you! AnnaSophia Robb plays the young Carrie Bradshaw as we follow her life and learn how she turned into…adult Carrie Bradshaw. Sounds fun, and people are pretty interested to see 1980’s fashion.

Elementary (CBS)

Modern day take on Sherlock Holmes. Jonny Lee Miller (Eli Stone) plays Holmes while Lucy Liu (Southland) portrays Watson.

Revolution (NBC)

J.J. Abrams serves as one of the executive producers on Revolution. It focuses a future without electricity. With power-hungry warlords everywhere, the show centres on the Matheson family who may hold the key to reverse the effects that happened 15 years ago.

The Following (Fox)

The Following revolves around blue-eyed man Kevin Bacon, an FBI agent forced out of retirement to catch a psycho serial killer (James Purefoy).

The Mob Doctor (Fox)

Due to a family debt to the mob, Grace Devlin (Jordana Spiro) has no choice but to be their doctor. It’s dangerous and wrong, but they’ll probably kill her brother if she doesn’t follow through, thus major conflict arises.

Last Resort (ABC)

A navy team forced to survive on their own when their country turns on them. Definitely check this trailer out, this show is really something.

Let’s see how the first episode goes

Chicago Fire (NBC)

Jesse Spencer (House) and Taylor Kinney (The Vampire Diaries) play the two macho firefighters at odds with each other after their fellow firefighter dies. Other than that, the show follows the Chicago fire department as they fight fires.

Do No Harm (NBC)

Following the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde complex, Steven Pasquale is a neurosurgeon who struggles to fight his dangerous alter ego.

Guys with Kids (NBC)

A story about 30-year old “kids” with kids of their own.

Emily Owens M.D. (The CW)

Mammie Gummer comes to grips with the fact that her new adult life is just like high school all over again. Justin Hartley stars as her crush.

With a slew of new entertainment heading our way, it’s no wonder why Fall is my favorite season. Post your thoughts in the comments below on which show you’re more excited for.

Remember that time when…..#I<3OTH

Hey Internetz! I miss talking to ya, it’s been so long – so soorryyy. May brings season finales, but it also drags intense (because I procrastinate a lot – what do you think i’m doing now?) exam weeks along with it.

Anyway, this random post exists because I cannot spam my twitter followers with what I’m going to proceed to type – they might think I’m crazy. I love One Tree Hill like so many fans out there. A day doesn’t go by where we don’t think about Tree Hill. Lots of things have ended this year, and we’re only 5 MONTHS in – it’s crazy.

Besides OTH, Chuck and Desperate Housewives have ended, and House is ending in a few days :'(. If you go beyond series finales, there’s also a slew of cancellations to the point where I even felt sad for shows I didn’t even watch before. All in all though, I am not going to apologize for feeling smug that Hart of Dixie & Nikita LIVE ON – sacrifices needed to be made (R.I.P. The Secret Circle and Ringer). Shows I did watch that unfortunately got the ‘falling axe of doom’ were The Finder and Alcatraz. Not really affected by the Alcatraz news to be honest. The plot was definitely thrilling, and the season finale had a good cliffhanger, but somewhere along the way I just lost interest. The show wasn’t bad, maybe it’s just not my genre. Regarding The Finder – that sucked. It was just your regular everyday show, nothing that great, but it was relaxing and there was every element of quirky attached to it.

Conclusion: just like humans, tv shows die – it’s the circle of life. One thing I refuse to get over is the cancellation of FlashForward – why network executives?? WHY?!

I’m ranting…and have lost track of the main point of the post. Without further a do, do you Remember that time…..:

  • when Nathan and Lucas take a road trip to Charlotte and the cassette gets stuck in the stereo. Then at the end they start singing “Holiday. Holiday, it’s the best day, it’s an ice cream day. I’m only happy, when I have, Holiday holiday holiday holiday”
  • when Brooke, pregnant Haley, and Quinn dress up as “superheroes”
  • when Quinn makes POT BROWNIES!
  • when Logan calls Quinn “mom” *singletear*
  • when Quentin and Jamie dance to “In the Ayer”
  • when Lucas sits in the airport and imagines his life with either Brooke, Peyton, or Lindsay
  • when all the girls get trapped in the library while the game is going on
  • when the Tree Hill Ravens win the championships and throughout all the chaos Lucas and Peyton kiss
  • when Keith gets shot *alotoftears*
  • when Chris Keller was there (every moment of him is awesome, duh)
  • when Brooke and Julian got married :’)
  • when Julian saved Brooke and Jamie from drowning
  • when the car crashed off the bridge in the season 3 finale
  • when Whitey and Keith would share a drink in his office (basically every moment when they were together in his office then)
  • when Dan and Rachel were married! (ew)
  • when Nathan stripped at the boytoy auction
  • when Peyton and Brooke teamed up to take down PsychoDerek (girl power all the waaayyyy)
  • when Millie debuts as a model with “ZERO IS NOT A SIZE”
  • when Chase makes a bad drink (every time – love him!)
  • when Brooke was a CLEAN TEEN!
  • when Jamie competes in a race car competition
  • when Mia asked the girls to pick her new album cover at Peyton’s baby shower
  • when Brooke adopts a sick baby (isn’t she the best?)
  • when Lucas and Peyton rode off into the sunset with their new baby (Y U NO STAY TILL SEASON 9?!!)
  • when Nathan starts playing slamball (like…wuuttt?)
  • when Lucas and Peyton divide the house into their own respective sides
  • when all the girls dance to “Wannabe”
  • when Mouth would be a commentator of the games at the Rivercourt
  • when Jamie was the smartass kid with the best one-liners and the advice to solve all the adult problems
  • when the gang takes a trip to that place which snows (thus resulting in a “snow day” montage)
  • when Nathan and Haley first kissed
  • when Clay proposed to Quinn with a Green Lantern ring

And that’s just off the top of my head! I have YET to complete my One Tree Hill marathon (currently at season 2), so stay tuned for more ‘why i love one tree hill’ memories 🙂

Tell me your favorite moments in the comments below!

TV Thoughts of the Week: 90210, One Tree Hill, Nikita, and more!

[This post refers to episodes that aired from March 25, 2012 to March 30, 2012]

Hey everybody! Waddup? How was your week? All good? Good. This week I did not put any thoughts in for The Voice because it was a bit boring for me, but that’s not fair to say because I’m not an expert in that whole genre. For all we know, it was amazing. Next week the live performances start, and most probably I won’t be talking about that either  because it’s not cool to judge when I don’t know anything. In terms of other TV, here’s how my week went:

Once Upon a Time, Ep 17 “Hat Trick”

I found this week’s episode quite educational. “Jefferson” is very wise, crazy, but wise. He had no dilly-dally lines. Everything he said was of equal importance and very heavy. He had this whole serious conversation with Emma, and she understood what he was saying and was starting to BELIEVE. I was so glad because that just moving the storyline 10 steps forward, but then turns out she was acting to believe. It was false hope for everyone. At the end though, she totally slipped up and couldn’t help but be curious. The evil queen, in my opinion, was more cruel this episode. First, she asks the retired Mad Hatter for one last job to be done, he says no because he’s realized his family is more important, then she plays with his feelings and gets him to do it and when he finally does she basically tells him that family is more important and he shouldn’t have done it. MEAN! She made him mad (as seen by him going on and on making hats to get him back to his daughter). The whole Regina-Gold thing was very confusing, and will we be seeing Jefferson back?

Talking floating heads are really scary.

Smash, Ep 8 “The Coup”

Smash is back this week with a totally useless episode and a number of things we didn’t even need to see. Examples you ask? We did not have to see Frank singing, because it was just weird. We also did not have to see Ivy and her friends (who have migrated back to her after being all buddy-buddy with Karen) “having fun” in a bowling alley. It sucked. I save the most horrible thing for last though: we certainly did not have to see a bedroom scene with Ellis in it. THAT IS GROSS. Never show me that ever again, please. Derek spent this week trying to go a different route with Marilyn and thought it would be okay with Team Levitt-Houston. He made Karen look like a ghost. Seriously, she was in this white robe-thing and her skin is fair. Add that to the dark hair and red lipstick and you got a ghost-looking person. Tom and Derek screamed at each other for a while, and Eileen kept on getting schooled by her daughter the whole episode. Conclusion of the episode: they need a STAR to play Marilyn. Oh, and before everything happened, Michael came to his senses about the affair and just walked away from it. I’ve gotten tired on commenting on this whole affair business so whatever.

P.S: Derek dawned this long black swivel coat that made him look like he just came out of a Matrix movie.

90210, Ep 20 “Blue Ivy”

Turns out, this week was the season 4 finale for the show. I don’t know why I didn’t realize that sooner. Moving on….Navid came back for Raj’s funeral and he looks so good! He’s all peeved about nobody picking up a phone to update him on what’s going on, and I don’t really blame him. CAST OF 90210, Y U NO CALL NAVID?? Half of the episode was all the stupid shenanigans 90210 pulls all the time, and then the other half was actually good. Naomi, she is just so fun, I think she has the best lines. She’s responsible for half of the shenanigans 90210 makes us watch, but she’s a better character than she was compared to season 1. Oh, and she’s engaged to a rich guy who might lose all his money if he doesn’t get married. First of all, PJ is so last-minute, dude needs to plan ahead. Second of all, Naomi you’ve been with this guy for like 2 weeks. Third of all, I am actually curious to see if they are really each others’ “the one”. Annie knows about PJ’s secret, and Jen allegedly knows too, so that means it’s going to come out. Yay, I can’t wait for that storyline (you can detect the sarcasm right?). Next we have Dixon, who followed his career instead of his girlfriend. Who can really blame him? He’s entitled to chase his dreams. What he didn’t have to do was run off like a coward without facing Ade properly. I don’t really care about Ade, I just wished Dixon would man up already. LIAM FINALLY KICKED VANESSA OUT! Which was great, except for the part where the b*tch stole all his $$$. He got all drunk and depressed, then Silver walked in all sad and vulnerable because she got the letter that she has cancer (right?) and I don’t really need to spell out what happened next. All that means to me is now Silver has been with all the guys in the gang. Here’s the really gritty part of the episode, at the end they show Ivy heading into really dangerous waters that could kill her. My initial reaction was “HOLY CRAP! IVY NO!”, then I rationalized a bit and went all “Does no one play close attention to the person that just lost their husband?? You don’t leave them alone!!” Raj’s fire pit funeral was really beautiful, and Gillian Zinser was great. My last thought is that I hope Caleb sticks around. God knows this group needs a priest to straighten things out.

One Tree Hill, Ep 12 “Anyone Who Had a Heart”

Directed by Sophia Bush, this episode unconsciously brought tears to my eyes. I don’t know if it was the burning boat, or happy family endings, or the fact that Green Lantern was somehow intertwined into the penultimate episode; all I know is that Tree Hill is one step closer to tying up all its loose ends. Mouth & Millie all wrapped up, Skills finally having something to do, and Chase opening his eyes to realize the magic of Tric. Haley is the best person ever. I agree with Brooke, how could she let Nathan out of her sight? I was a bit peeved in the beginning because I really wanted to see Nathan as well, but as we went along and saw how great Haley was about the whole thing, I too believed that Nathan being with Jamie was much needed (Yes, I know that is fiction, but shut up okay). Julian is making ‘An Unkindness of Ravens’ a TV show, and HOW CUTE IS HE TO INSERT HIMSELF IN IT??? And while it would have been more common for him to just call Lucas up and talk to him, I am glad that we got to see Brooke’s point of view/pain about her parents when she was younger. One Tree Hill I tell ya, they are just able to give us things we never even knew we wanted. During the early seasons of OTH, we knew that Brooke basically had absent parents and I always wondered more about it, so I’m glad that it resurfaced. Clay asked Quinn to marry him, which was fitting. I don’t know why I never thought about it, during the episode I actually felt like Mouth would propose to Millie. Anyway, I’m just so happy for that whole family, and I find myself liking Quinn a bit more after she was so cool with the Logan thing. That scene where they were trying to get Logan in the water, and as Clay is trying, Quinn is there in the background with her camera. I love that scene. There’s something so endearing about it. Now I’m going to proceed to geek out about the whole power ring thing. OMG when he took out that power ring, I knew I loved him. Then at the end when the Green Lantern symbol was shown on the tent: aaaaawwwwwwwhhhhh!!!!

P.S: yes i know some people are pretty ticked off that Julian just added himself into the story, and I see how that’s disrespectful of him to do so and it’s not really fair to Lucas – you don’t really add yourself to something that’s already happened and think people will be cool with it. I just choose to look at the brighter side of this, I choose to look at it from his point of view. Plus, Brooke doesn’t seem to mind.

The Vampire Diaries, Ep 18 “The Murder of One”

First thing first, Finn is the worst Original Vampire ever. He can’t do anything. Also, I felt just a bit sad for Sage when she saw Finn die right in front of her eyes. But not to worry, she ended up dying as well! It’s just good etiquette to tie up loose ends, plus she doesn’t have to suffer and can be with Finn in vampire heaven or whatever. Wasn’t it smart of Sage to create a mini vampire army? I don’t like Sage, but I like her decisions. Stakes are the name of the game this episode, and boy do they look good. Stakes from the white oak tree look much better than normal boring stakes. Each one of them had a stake, but they did a big mistake giving one to Alaric. Damon forced him to put his ring back on because they were going to be hunting vampires. This was idiotic because Alaric wasn’t even a part of it, Caroline babysat him then he went home. There was no need for a ring to be put on his finger at all, and now we have one missing stake and only evil alter ego Alaric knows where it is. Do you think he just changed the hiding place or he actually killed someone with it? Back in Klaus’ mansion, Klaus got Bonnie to undo the linkage spell by threatening her. If TVD were a car, its engine would be threatening to kill loved ones. It’s the only reason anyone does anything in Mystic Falls. Love is so dangerous. Right, so Bonnie unlinked the Originals and then had a breakdown (someone should probably tell her that she just saved all the vampires from becoming extinct, might help cheer her up). Stefan traded 8 stakes for Damon’s life, which made Klaus & Rebekah argue because he’s just too used to being alone and all she wants is a family (and her plaything back). The best development of all is that if you kill an original vampire, everyone else they turned dies too. That’s awesome!!! It’s logical and horrible at the same time. They have to figure out which original vampire is connected to Damon & Stefan, and we all know Klaus turned Tyler so this might be a Caroline vs Elena thing? I hope Caroline has a fighting chance, Elena is annoying and always gets what she wants.

Nikita, Ep 18 “Power”

Michael in a suit, the beginning already got off to a good start! I enjoyed this episode so much. Why? It was not confusing. I understood everything that was happening and the big plan of the episode within the first 10 minutes because they were so kind to make it clear. I really appreciated that, and also the episode didn’t leave me with a lot of questions hanging. It was just one of those episodes where everything was at ease, or as ease as Nikita can get. Nikita herself was smiles half of the episode and made lots of funny little comments. Birkhoff, even after 3 seasons, still manages to surprise me with all the things he can do. Mostly because I didn’t really know all of those things were possible. The episode featured many Amanda-Nikita moments. They physically went head to head, and Amanda shot Nikita but was too scared to fire another shot that would kill her so she ran off instead. Then the second time, Amanda locked Nikita in chamber that was getting all the air sucked out of it. They had a heart to heart moment through the glass, then Nikita used Amanda’s weakness to her advantage and escaped the chamber! The coolest part was when the explosive Nikita slid out of the chamber just exploded and pushed Amanda to the side. OMG THAT SCENE WAS EPIC. Amanda just FLEW!! Back in the Zetrov board meeting, Alexandra was making Ari piss his pants and totally got him fired HA-HA. She made this other good scientist guy leader of Zetrov, and now we can finally put that storyline to rest because she has rid Zetrov of evil, yay! While Amanda was out in Russia with her Ari, Percy (a.k.a master manipulator/genius) won back the approval of Divison! And I don’t even know why I’m excited about this. Percy is bad news, but he was fair to want his baby back and to show Divison what Amanda was going to do them. Amanda and Ari have both lost their power (except they have a black box with them), and are now on the run from gogol AND division. Good luck you guys.

Anyone else pick up the distinct noise of Russian music playing in the backgound?

That’s it for the week folks! Thank you for reading and do leave comments below on your opinions and thoughts of the weeks’ episodes.

Theory: How to make shows Last

Instead of my brain cells being active during school, I have the pleasure of my thoughts not being able to shut up at 2 in the morning when I’m trying to sleep. It’s not all bad though, I did come up with a theory about some of the shows I watch and would like to share it with you. I’m sure what I’m going to say is nothing new, but it’s just one of those things where I opened my eyes and noticed something I didn’t see before.

What sparked this thought was reading the tweet that stated Nikita and/or Hart of Dixie will be canceled. These are shows in their first/second seasons and already facing cancellation. Lots of shows do, but it hurts more when it’s a show you actually watch. It’s just been bugging me lately because I feel like it’s much harder for a show to reach four/five seasons and more. Once you’ve got four seasons, I’d say that’s really swell and you’ve made your mark. Excluding shows that focus on solving crimes (CSI, Criminal Minds, Bones, Psych) and half-an-hour comedies, the shows that have really been there from my childhood to now is Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, House, and One Tree Hill. Yes, 3 out of 4 shows mentioned are wrapping up this year, but I would just like to say that they didn’t get axed – they are all getting fitting goodbyes to tie up loose ends and give the fans something special because they have been around for so long.  My point being is that I think shows that last this long are becoming extinct. And it’s a bit sad. You could argue to why a show shouldn’t stay around for so long, but if the fans are willing to fight for a show then you really can’t say anything (made evident by Chuck which ended on its fifth season after fans fought to keep it going for as long as it could).

You could also say that content is way more important than length. And I agree with that completely. I’m just looking to see if shows nowadays can reach a legendary length like shows conceived years ago that are still going on now. This slight fascination for shows to go the distance is a combination of curiosity to see if it’s possible and just me wanting a kid to watch a show now and still watch the same show when they are teens.

A show starts on its first season with no way to know where it could go, only with an idea. Maybe this theory could give it a fighting chance to last longer:

“Focus on a place, not a plot”

A place: Seattle Grace Hospital, Wisteria Lane, Tree Hill, the Upper East Side

A plot: putting on a Broadway musical (Smash won’t last that long), taking down an evil organization like Division (it won’t last that long like the ones I’ve mentioned above, but CW PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW TOO EARLY), seeking revenge against the people who destroyed your father’s life (Revenge is the best show ever, but again, won’t last long like I’m looking for a show to),

Everybody out there: get a general sense of what you want your show to be about, remember DO NOT CREATE AN ENDGAME. Pick a place, put some people in it, and create some good drama.

All of this made evident by Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, One Tree Hill, and Gossip Girl. I don’t think these shows necessarily picked a place first, but as the show runs for years and years, isn’t that what you know the show to be? When shows were being conceived, there was an overview plot and it could be easily explained to anybody. Then as these shows get older and older, I am not going to explain every plotline to someone who asks. For Grey’s Anatomy I would simply say “it’s a show about a bunch of doctors in seattle grace hospital, from interns to residents and all the drama that surrounds them” and Wikipedia agrees with me on this.

In all of these shows, the drama revolves around the setting instead of the other way around. And along the way, viewers are able to identify specific places in the main setting that are imprinted onto their brains. It helps us visualize specific moments or scenes in the shows that will help create an overall positive impact. For instance, most fans of One Tree Hill will jump to the Rivercourt. Once you got the Rivercourt in your brain, all the memories come flooding in. They bring you back without having to think extremely hard about, its association at its best. What these places also do is create a map, and that makes you confident about Tree Hill; it makes you a part of it.

Mark Schwahn (One Tree Hill) and J.J. Abrams (Lost) are currently working together to bring us a new show called Shelter. “Shelter is set at historic New England summer resort Shelter Bay where the new and returning staff attend to the practical, emotional and often comical needs of the guests while navigating friendships, rivalries and romances of their own.” If i’m following the theory, this is a smart idea. They got a place, they got people, and they got drama. Perfect. Who really knows where this show will go, but I have faith in it, and it definitely does not hurt that Schwahn & Abrams are working together.

So there you have it! The setting is the big picture. And that picture will not crumple up and die, it will withstand time people.

TV Thoughts of the Week: Grey’s Anatomy, Smash, The Voice, and more!

[This post refers to episodes that aired from March 11, 2012 to March 16, 2012]

Hey everybody! A week of tv gone by, albeit not necessarily the best week, but it had its good moments. Especially in the beginning; the middle and the end sort of dipped a little. So without further ado, here are my thoughts:

Once Upon A Time, Ep 15 “Red-Handed”

OMG so much better than last week’s episode! Red/Ruby is awesome. And looks way prettier in the fairy tale world than in Storybrooke. We learned how Red met Snow and the importance of the red hood, which was really cool. As in, a hood that makes you NOT turn into a crazy human-killing wolf. Yes, that is definitely badass and super useful. All throughout the episode, I kept on thinking about the Red Riding Hood movie, the one with Amanda Seyfried in it. That movie is uber creepy and pretty messed up, but I was happy to see OUAT go a different (and more awesome) route as to who the wolf really is. The wolf looked pretty good as well. But that became sad really quickly when she unknowingly mauled Peter, the love of her life, to death…that was a really emotionally charged scene which wrapped the whole episode together. One of the most interesting storylines in the fairy tale world so far.

The Voice, Ep 7 “The Battles, Week 2”

When I think of a battle, my brain enters super mega destruction mode. Like a real kickass battle where people fight to the death. And so when I think of the battle rounds on The Voice, I seem to always want to watch this really loud song where the contestants are at each other’s throats and you can really feel the power and the excitement because that is just my perception of a ‘battle’. This week though, one battle managed to completely satisfy me without fists and fury that come alone with the word ‘battle’. And that battle is this one: Charlotte Sometimes vs Lex Land. Pumped Up Kicks is something I love to hear, so that already got me in the right mood for it. Then you got these two brilliant UNIQUE voices which together sort of changed my feel of the song. I LOVED THIS BATTLE. Going in, I wanted Charlotte Sometimes to win, but coming out, i was on team Lex Land by then. And I understand why Blake didn’t appoint her the winner, she gets nervous easily, and Charlotte Sometimes is more fun and that’ll help you in the live performances. If you haven’t seen it, please check out this battle. Okay, on the other battles…..uhm, I like how Cristina picked Sara instead of Jeff to win. Oh, and they did the whole Miranda Lambert calling Lex before the battle rounds thing again. It’s annoying. It’s major product placement and it’s like their trying to make Miranda Lambert ‘the coolest advisor on The Voice’ ever. Don’t get me wrong, it is actually very nice of her. But like, why you wasting precious minutes on this? An episode is already long enough. Kim Yarbrough vs Whitney Myer? Oh, we all knew Kim had to win, it’s just sad Whitney was collateral damage. I’m actually very happy with Cristina his week, she picked Lindsey Pavao as winner in her battle, and that’s great because Lindsey was one of my favorite blind auditions.

Smash, Ep 6 “Chemistry”

History is made at night, so close the books, turn off the lights, and LISTEN. Let my heart be the teacher, no one here to disapprove, as we review the lesson you’ve been MISSING. Let the moon be our only light. Cause history is made at night.

Stuck in my head all week! It’s a really beautiful song, and Michael’s voice is nice and deep. Turns out this show really is ADULT GLEE. Because this week, they really managed to put the adult in it with ADULTERY. It was crazy, and something I did not get at all. As in obviously, it’s not something I can relate to. And with that, I decided that Smash got way too adult for me this week. It’s not like I haven’t seen adultery before, Grey’s Anatomy HELLO. But Smash did it in such a different way. 2 weeks ago, I was logical about the whole Michael & Julia relationship, stating that they both have families. Then last week, I was all swept up in that kiss of theirs. Then this week we’re supposed to get on board with the fact that one kiss leads to adultery? And even after they did the deed, they were smiling about it. Like i said, I don’t get it. ALSO, yes, magnificent job doing it on the couch which all of us (including you) will most probably be seeing every episode. I think they (the show) rushed into it too fast, like give us more stolen looks and forbidden passion scenes to really make us like Michael & Julia before you let them commit adultery. I don’t know though, they could be going somewhere really good with this and I guess all we can do is just wait and see what happens next. Other notes: What, is Ellis Eileen’s assistant now? What on earth is happening!? TOM, keep your assistant in order!! (or better yet, FIRE HIM). Oh, and it took Ivy major mood swings and drugs to tell Derek off. Which was a pretty sweet and amusing scene. They ended the episode pretty abruptly for me, I still thought there was more and then my screen went blank and I was just stunned for a minute because it was over.

Cougar Town, Ep 5 “A One Story Town

JD/Zach Braff on CT!!! They kept him under wraaapppsss, I read all the spoiler news and saw all the spoiler pics that Scrubs was invading CT this week, but they didn’t tell us about JD! Oh, it was such a great surprise!

Modern Family, Ep 18 “Send Out The Clowns”

DUNPHY FAMILY FTW!!!

One Tree Hill, Ep 10 “Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

I was tweeting while watching this week’s episode, so you can check out my timeline for extra insight and in the moment emotions. Anyway, Dan might be dead, and I’m going to say it you guys; he’s definitely redeemed himself for his previous sins. If you really think about it, who else would do that for Nathan? And when Nathan shot the Bad Guy, Bad Guy said what everrryoonneee was thinking: ‘Like Father, Like Son’. We have officially come full circle.

This scene was beautiful:

Was so nice to see Clay being healthy and finally moving on from Sara and that part of his life. Even you didn’t hear what he said, the scene already looks so beautiful which is why I included the screenshot in the first place. I…don’t like Quinn, BUT she is good for Clay, so maybe she’s not so bad after all yeh.

And then there was the whole Xavier attack scene, in which everyone was actually glad to see Tara. Thank god Brooke is safe. It crossed my mind that they could potentially kill her off, WHICH WAS A TERRIBLE THOUGHT so yay for Brooke not dying!

What I’ve learnt from this episode and I guess the season so far IS: the law is stupid. and if you want to get rid of bad people, I guess we’ve got to do it ourselves.

I’ve been keeping count of the reveal of the mysteries they showed in the first episode of the season, and as off this episode, all 6 have been revealed. Wow, episode 10 is super pivotal. We have 3 more episodes till THE END. And after this episode, I assumed that all the thrill and mystery would be sort of over. BUT THEN, I saw a sneak peek on TVLine from next week’s episode and I’m so happy to see that their keeping the thrill going!!

Grey’s Anatomy, Ep 17 “One Step Too Far

It took a patient losing her speech to get Derek to realize that MerDer are just not destined to work together?! UNFAIR. AND SAD. BUT THAT IS THE POINT. I LOVE GREY’S ANATOMY! You all watched the scene with Morgan & Alex in the meeting with Arizona, Callie and Teddy right? I was grinning at the thought of a new romance between Alex and Morgan (that is her name right? sorry if isn’t). But towards the end of the episode, grey skies entered the picture and that is NOT a good idea apparently. And now the sad and DISAPPOINTING part….Owen admitted that he did in fact cheat. What happened? I always believed Owen to be the good helpful army guy he is. Sure, he’s made some very controversial and questionable decisions in the past. But he was always a good guy trying to do his best…and his defense for cheating is “it hurts to love you (Christina)”. Who do you think he cheated with? I’m opening the possibility of it just being a random chick but hoping it’s someone we know because that would be excellent drama.

Private Practice, Ep 17 “The Letting Go

Erica’s going to die. After facing death, then getting awesome surgery and beating death. Death comes back. Talk about a cruel destiny. The best scene was when Mason ran out of the room towards Charlotte as he kept saying ‘I didn’t cry’. And then they show Cooper in the background and his face like that. Owh, just gut wrenching that was. Moving on, Amelia kept on mentioning that the baby was conceived while she was doing drugs and all sorts of things. Logically, her baby has chances of being born abnormally…but the question is, are they going to go there?

The Vampire Diaries, Ep 16 “1912

We’ve seen how awesome TVD episodes can be…this one fell short, no? The only reaaalllllyyyy important part is when we find out that the ring Alaric wears is turning him into an absent-minded killer. And Meredith Fell is a really confusing person. Hoping to see Caroline and Klaus next week, i miss them!

Nikita, Ep 16 “Doublecross

Nikita’s back! Yayyy!! Okay, let’s get to it….so Carla is dead? I’m very doubtful of deaths lately, and thus finding it a bit hard to believe that Carla is dead. She’s such an important part of division, and Nikita. And we only got to see her a few episodes…and now she’s dead? I don’t see how she can be NOT DEAD because Nikita closed her eyes and everything. But…yes, for some supernatural reason, I am just not convinced. How immensely complex (and smart) was Nikita this week? I like that she can be the badass killer we all know and love AND the loving, do-the-right-thing, caring, apologetic person that has brought all these people together to fight against Division. It started out with her, and now we have Alex, Birkhoff, Sean(?), Ryan (he lives! yay!), Michael, and Owen fighting the same cause. So yea, we have definitely come a long way and Nikita has grown. And then there’s Percy, who is super elusive.

That’s it for the week folks! Thank you for reading and do leave comments below on your opinions and thoughts of the weeks’ episodes. More shows return next week and there’s the season finale of Pretty Little Liars, so whatever you do, don’t stop watching TV.

TV Thoughts of the Week: Pretty Little Liars, Once Upon a Time, The Vampire Diaries, and more!

[This post refers to episodes that aired from March 18, 2012 to March 23, 2012]

Hola everybody! This week was the big ‘A’ reveal on Pretty Little Liars, and it received mixed reviews. On One Tree Hill, Dan Scott the man that couldn’t die for the past 8 seasons finally went out with a tearful goodbye. After all of that, I say the highlight of my week was probably How I Met Your Mother because it’s awesome and I missed it. All drama shows make me enjoy the comedies more than usual. Read on to hop into my brain and see what I thought of  TV this week:

Once Upon A Time, Ep 16 “Heart of Darkness”

Started out AWESOME! I love the whole ‘red riding hood is a wolf storyline’, and it was such a treat that the ep started out with her turning and going all badass on those knights. The episode also features what having love and not having love can do to a person in the fairytale world, and the importance of teaching the audience that ‘Evil isn’t born, it’s made’. How funny was it when Charming kissed Snow and then she proceeded to knock the living daylights out of him? Fast forward to the part where she does remember him, I take note that true love really is strong because that was not in any way a grand kiss but it managed to do the trick alright. In the grand scheme of things, David remembered some of his fairy tale memories but he’s got them completely confused with Storybrooke memories. To that I say: ‘Dude! In your memories she had long hair, Mary Margaret has short hair!!’. But then again, it’s a completely valid reaction to be uber confused so I guess I can cut him some slack. I will NOT cut him some slack for not believing in Mary Margaret though. She’s right, she stuck by him and then he didn’t do the same. Men, i tell ya. It’s the reason we need a fairy tale world, to believe somewhere out there, there is a Prince Charming. At the end, Rumple got his sweet lookin’ potion of love and Mary Margaret escapes her cell. Now on to the whole ‘Katherine is missing’ storyline. If that is her heart, we know she’s alive because Regina hasn’t squeezed it to dust right. All she needs to do is come back to Storybrooke to prove it, then this whole storyline can wrap up and we can all move on because it’s getting a bit too draggy for my liking.

How I Met Your Mother, Ep 19 “The Broath”

Amazing episode. Just the best. It had EVERYTHING. Let me repeat, EVERYTHING!!!! How could it not? The episode was written by Carter Bays & Craigh Thomas themselves! They are going to be revealing Barney’s wife at the season finale, and as much as I want it to be Quinn, I’m going to be uber cautious and not jump into things. So cautious that I’m still leaving Robin on the table. You never know with How I Met Your Mother (which is why they are awesome).

Pretty Little Liars, Ep 25 “unmAsked”

Season finale and MONA IS ‘A’. Or at least part of Team ‘A’? It’s really crazy that there’s actually a TEAM out there who seek to ruin the lives of these “Pretty Little Liars”. The girls also got their love lives back on track….except Emily who has to supposedly deal with the death of Maya now. How horrible is that? I can’t believe they would do that to Emily, to any one of them actually. It’s all about raising the stakes now i guess. You uncover one of the members of Team A, and we kill one of your loved ones. Yup, that’s totally scary. Speaking of scary, HOW CREEPY IS IT THAT JENNA IS PRETENDING TO BE BLIND WHEN SHE CAN ACTUALLY SEE IN ONE EYE?!! I hope there’s some psychological problem with Jenna, because I took comfort in the fact that Mona has multiple personality disorder and an IQ to turn her into an evil genius instead of her just being sane and doing all those things. What’s going to happen next season though? The girls will get another text from A and the first 2 seasons repeat itself? It’s going to be interesting when season 3 starts, the slate has been cleaned and things are fresh…except for the whole ‘dead body’ part of course.

Smash, Ep 7 “The Workshop”

First thing first, if you haven’t heard, Smash has been renewed for a second season. Congratulations to them, I am just glad that a show I’m watching hasn’t been canceled. Anyway….so this week on Smash was family day for me. Everybody came to the workshop to support their loved ones. Although, Ivy didn’t really see it that way. Julia was not all smiles this week as opposed to last week. This whole Michael and Julia thing is like a roller coaster. One minute their happy, next minute their not. Make up your minds! Meanwhile, Ellis shows off his trademark move by snooping his nose where it doesn’t belong. When he told Eileen, and she told him to never repeat those words again, OMG I WANTED HIM TO REPEAT IT SO BAD. He needs to go away. During the workshop, Karen still managed to be the second center of attention next to Ivy, which is ridiculous. I’m on Ivy’s side on this. Towards the end, Team Houston-Levitt made a “creative decision” to fire Michael. I don’t really have any strong opinions about this, just hoping that he’s not completely out of the picture. I doubt he is, they kept Karen when she wasn’t cast as Marilyn and they refuse to kill of Ellis even though a lot of people hate him. Focusing on Marylin: The Musical, the workshop didn’t go as great as everyone would have liked. This would have to be one the reasons why I’m so interested in the show. It’s a look into Broadway, and all the hardships that come with it. I always knew that Broadway is super tough, but seeing the process is knowledge. Of course this is a TV show not a documentary, so everything isn’t fact, but they are pretty close to it.

90210, Ep 19 “The Heart Will Go On”

Alright, a 90210 episode worth talking about! This episode was definitely a step up from last week’s mostly because Raj came back. And then he left. Then things got incredibly sad. On top of that, the show also managed to leave us curious about billionaire PJ and Naomi NOT finding true love. Solid episode. You know when Ivy left to get Raj water, IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT RAJ WAS GONNA DIE WHEN SHE CAME BACK BUT STILL SO SO SAD. I feel calm with the fact that Raj did not die divorced, and that Ivy lost her husband that day not her ex-husband. It’s nice. In other news, next episode we find out if Silver has the cancer gene or not and possibly more scenes with Annie and her new man. Also, if Liam was so bad in acting, how on earth is he in a movie? It does not make sense.

One Tree Hill, Ep 11 “Danny Boy”

While the thrill, suspense, and danger of the first 10 episodes are over. This episode leaves me in awe in a different way. Like Haley said, closure makes a difference. Dan finally opened up about Keith, and he died a redeemed man. Keith had the best line of all: ‘Don’t worry little brother, you’re my plus one’. I loved it. Intertwined with flashbacks from earlier seasons and visits to see Dan one last time, this episode was a fitting goodbye to the man we have all known to hate at some point. And at the end, it was a tribute to Paul Johansson’s mother who had passed away when they were shooting the episode.

P.S: I feel so sad for Brooke, and I was totally screaming with her when she asked why her father didn’t love her.

The Vampire Diaries, Ep 17 “Break On Through”

Lots of Damon for one episode, no one’s complaining of course. Damon trusted Sage, which didn’t really go his way, but he’s Damon. He has the ability to turn things around and the ending was awesome because he and Stefan were all armed to kill some originals! Woot-woot! Don’t want Klaus to die but yayyyy more badass episodes! Stefan also had an awesome scene where his vampire face peeked in but then he kept control and chose to save someone’s life instead of having lunch. Meredith totally owes him. But before that, Elena and Stefan found some of Alaric’s documents. This whole Alaric murder spree thing makes me feel so betrayed. It’s like we didn’t know Alaric at all and the first 2 seasons mean nothing. Alaric used to be one of my favorite characters, but now he’s all secret murderer and he has the worst haircut in town. Yes, it’s the rings fault, but can’t Bonnie find a way to make another ring that has the same function but does not turn people psycho? We got to see Jeremy again and I missed him! And I do really hope that he’s ‘gone out with his friends’ instead of going out to slay somebody.

The Voice, Ep 8 “The Battles, Week 3”

Wow, CeeLo did what he does best, gave us a performance to remember. Erin Martin vs The Shields Brothers. To quote Adam, it was SO WEIRD! It was more scary than entertaining for me. The Shields Brothers were right to twist Scott Pilgrim vs the world to make it Erin Martin vs rock and roll; because it really was like that. I preferred The Shields Brothers, i wished CeeLo picked them. But were we really surprised when he didn’t? She’s “interesting” and he likes that, but it’s unfair to just say that because Erin really does have a unique voice. For me, I really didn’t enjoy Erin at all, I liked her blind auditions but I did not like this. Next performance was No Air from Team Christina which was the least entertaining performance of the night. It was boring even though Christina wanted a performance so bad. You know what was a good battle? Angel Taylor vs Katrina Parker. I went in not choosing any sides. It was hard for me to determine the winner and these are the sort of fair battles I enjoy watching. Adam made a good call on this one (from picking the competition to picking the winner). Same goes for Team Blake’s Gwen vs Erin “We Belong” battle. Erin’s voice was amazing yeah (I wasn’t expecting to like her so much). Pip won his battle, which I expected, but still happy because Pip…well, he’s Pip.

Extra notes: Doesn’t Robin Thicke’s hair just look like the perfect gelato? Kelly Clarkson has got to be the most enthusiastic adviser ever. It’s so amusing that she loves The Voice so much when she came from Idol.

That’s it for the week folks! Thank you for reading and do leave comments below on your opinions and thoughts of the weeks’ episodes.
